Notes on Use for the New Pocket Design

The new pocket design is aimed at limiting some of the negative effects pockets can have on garments with loft. Therefore, there are some notes to be made on their use. The bag of the internal pocket is intentionally not connected to the garment. It is only connected at the entry point and at the zipper (or center seam). The benefit of this is that any weight placed in the pockets will only transfer to those two places. Those two places will pull down in places where there are already sewn through seams. The entry point weight will be carried by the side seam, up to the shoulder / sleeve seam. The weight placed at the zipper (or center seam) will be carried by the zipper (or center seam) up to the neck line seam. The goal is to spare the whole front panel and shoulders from loft loss caused by carrying that weight.

There is a drawback that is easily remedied by user education. If you place heavier items in these pockets, they may settle in the middle and sig below your bottom hem. While undesirable, this is a good sign. It is an alert for you to take some action.

First, if that weight is such that it is sagging the pocket bag down this low, it’s worth questioning whether this is an item that is appropriate for carrying in a puffy garment. Things that are this heavy will have a negative effect on the loft that keeps you warm, even in a design like this that aims to mitigate it. Second, if you decide that this is where you want to store this item, the situation can be remedied by cinching up your bottom drawcord. By doing this, you take the weight off of the garment and place it onto the cinched cord, which transfers the weight directly onto your body, instead of hanging off the garment. This also keeps the item tucked up in the garment, instead of hanging below. Easy peasy!!

Of course there is going to be a limit to how much weight that drawcord can effectively hold. Really heavy items will overwhelm it and lean over onto the garment panel anyway. However, items like a phone, keys, and wallet can be held like this without compromising the garment too much. The weight of hands and arms are really heavy and can overwhelm this, but we can choose to hold that weight differently so that our garment can be warm.
