We are currently using untreated 1000 fill power goose down and ExpeDry 900 fill power goose down. I selected these for a few reasons.
- I have a long history of using these and I know their long term loft performance is excellent.
- ExpeDry Down is an attractive evolution in water repellency treatments. While I think that all of these treatments have a limited effect in use, a treatment like ExpeDry that is permanent, does not wash out, and takes less energy to add, is attractive. If there isn’t a big drawback to it, then it starts to make sense to have it there in case there is some small window of effectiveness.
- It is Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified. “The Responsible Down Standard aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to an unnecessary harm”. This is essential to me.
Whether we choose animal products or synthetics, there is always a cost. The best we can do is strive to find the best option with the least cost to environment, sustainability, and ethics.
