This is the draft skirt version of the Serpentes. The draft skirt design is proving to be the most versatile in our range. It can vent as well as a regular quilt in warm weather, but it can also function almost as draft-free as a false bottom bag in cold weather.
The skirt is about 8″ and extends off the edge of the insulated portion. The skirt can hang to block drafts. It can be used to hold and control the edge. It can be tucked under your body to hold it in place. You can even run a cord through the tube on the outer edge of the skirt to cinch it up into a sort of false bottom. All of our skirt quilts now come with a single pad strap which clips the torso in position on the pad. Like normal quilt pad straps, the clip width is adjustable. Unlike regular quilts, this strap is not intended to manage drafts. The skirt does that way better than any strap system. The point of this strap is simply to keep the quilt in place while you move in the night.
The Serpentes also uses Argon 49 7d shell fabric, 1000fp down, ultralight shock cord, and ultralight baffle fabric. Since it is such an ultralight focused system it also uses the older Timmermade temperature rating system. The new system is a very conservative rating and really overshoots the insulation needs of the average person in an effort to provide a comfort rating for everyone at the set temp rating. The Serpentes rating system is aimed at achieving a comfort rating for the average person so that the ultralighter can better dial in the level of insulation they need without carrying too much. This system was used for many years with an extremely high success rate for keeping folks warm. However, it should be noted that there isn’t a big cushion built into this system for colder sleepers and they may want to consider adjusting their temp rating.
It is important with any sleep system that it is paired with a sleeping pad rated to similar temperatures. It is especially important with quilts and false bottom bags and it should be noted that pads that utilize empty spaces are generally not suitable for these types of sleep systems.
All Timmermade sleep systems now come with a torso pad strap that holds the system in place. The Skirt quilts and Serpentes previously did not have them. The one on the Serpentes are just like the ones on the Wren / Newt, we just widened the connection for less point loading. The one for the skirt quilts is like a regular quilt strap with adjustable width. The skirt hangs inside of where the strap attaches.
