The different out shell choices allow you to cater this garment to your specific needs. Hyper D provides a super breathable options for high output activity at 1oz/yd2. Airwave provides the same air permeability for high output activity, but very good durability at 1.8oz/yd2. Argon 67 provides a good cfm balance at a low weight of 0.67oz/yd2. Argon 90 provides better windproofness than A67 and a bit more durability, with less breathability at 0.9oz/yd2.
The different batting options allow you to cater the insulation to your needs. The 40gsm option is a level I would estimate at about the same as AD90 / Argon 67, but at a lower weight. One layer of AD90 and one layer of A67 results in 3.3oz/yd2. One layer of Octair 40 and two layers of Argon 67 results in 2.5oz/yd2. The 80gsm option feels about the same as 2.5oz/yd2 Climashield Apex, but with much better consistency. Apex often has many thick and thin spots, but Octair does not. It will compress a bit smaller than Apex too.
These are available with the large external access, internal pockets that are designed to limit insulation compression from weight.
Both the full zip and pullover versions come with the super adjustable three piece hood with front and rear adjustment.
Wearing with a pack (zippered version only) -Typically, to put on your insulation, you have to remove your pack, put the item on and put the pack back on over it. Then once you do this, the insulation in the garment gets compressed under the pack and under the pack straps. These areas tend to get wet with sweat and the long term compression combined with the sweat oils pressed into the insulation degrades it heavily. The jacket has a top snap that allows the garment to be put on/taken off over backpack straps, without removing the pack. The jacket is put on backwards and snapped at the top behind your neck/over the straps. The bottom can be connected with the zipper by your lower back/below the pack, or tucked in without connecting the zipper, or left to hang along the edge of the pack. This leaves the pack against your back and the jacket cinched along it, but not under it, or under only a small portion. If you are wearing the jacket forward, the top snap also keeps the jacket secure while allowing you to open the zipper for ventilation.
